How world’s biggest volcanoes formed unveiled
The 168-year-old mystery of how the world’s biggest and most active volcanoes formed in Hawaii has been solved.
The study found that the volcanoes formed along twin tracks due to a shift in the Pacific plate’s direction three million years ago.
The Pacific Plate is a tectonic plate that lies beneath the Pacific Ocean. At 103 million square kilometres, it is the largest tectonic plate on the Earth.
India may receive higher than predicted rainfall this year: IMD
India may receive a higher rainfall this year than previously predicted, citing the weaken- ing of the El Nino phenomenon.
India would see normal monsoon with 96 per- cent of rainfall still maintained as the current forecast, and an update could only be known by the first week of June.
El Nino is a climatic phenomenon which is the warm phase of the cycle in the Pacific Ocean and IOD is a climate event occurring over the equatorial Indian Ocean. Both impact the monsoon.
China tests a ‘lunar palace’ on earth
Chinese students will live in a laboratory sim- ulating a lunar-like environment for up to 200 days as Beijing prepares for its long-term goal of putting humans on the moon.
Four postgraduate students from the capital’s astronautics research university Beihang entered the 160- square-metre cabin dubbed the ‘Yuegong-1’ or ‘Lunar Palace’.
