LED Street Lighting Project
Government of India, through the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Ministry of Power, would be retrofitting 10 lakh conventional street lights with LED lights in Gram Panchayats of 7 districts in Andhra Pradesh.
★This is the first project for rural LED street lighting in the country under the Government of India’s Street Lighting National Project (SLNP).
★ These installations have led to an annual savings of over 7.8 crore kWh, translating into an annual reduction of over 65,000 tonnes of CO2.
National Animal
The Rajasthan High Court recommended that the Centre declare the cow as a national animal and increase the punishment for cow slaughter to life imprisonment.
★The judgment was delivered by Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma at the High Court’s Jaipur Bench on his last working day. The judge had earlier issued interim directions several times since 2010 for the upkeep of the gaushala, where a large number of cows had died recently due to unhygienic conditions.
Loan Agreement
An agreement for IBRD Credit of USD 36 Million from World Bank for ‘Himachal Pradesh Public Financial Management Capacity Building Program’ was signed in New Delhi by Raj Kumar, Joint Secretary (MI), Department of Economic Affairs on behalf of the Government of India and Mr. Junaid Kamal Ahmad, Country Director, World Bank (India) on behalf of the World Bank.
★The Program is expected to contribute to enhancing efficiency of key departments, improving budget credibility, strengthening systems and procedures to improve fiscal discipline.
Officials’ Appointment
President Pranab Mukherjee approved the appointment of officials in the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC).
★Ram Shankar Katheria has been appointed as chairman while L. Murugan as positioned as vicechairman of the Commission.
India stands by deal

100% Attendance

India to take up …
The government is planning to launch a dedi- cated international subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take up road and highway projects abroad, particularly in South Asia.
★Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said his ministry was considering a proposal to launch ‘NHAI International’ for undertaking roads and highway construction projects abroad.

★Addressing the media at the end of the Summit, President Prime Minister Modi recalled his first visit to St. Petersburg as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001.
★Underlining the time-tested strategic dimension of the India Russia relation- ship, the Prime Minister mentioned the forthcoming first Tri-services exercise – INDRA 2017, between the two countries.

Flood, landslides hit Assam
Assam State Disaster Management Authority officials said at least 13,000 people have been affected due to the year’s first wave of floods in 28 villages in Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Biswanath districts.
★The army, along with the civil administration, also carried out a joint exercise on flood res- cue titled ‘Megh Rahat’ in Dharamtul area in Morigaon district.
Hill Area for Northeast
Dr Jitendra Singh announced the launch of, ‘Hill Area Development Programme’ (HADP) for Northeast in Imphal (Manipur).
★He cited figures to state that out of 80 dis- tricts of Northeast, 3 districts of hilly areas, which ranked lowest in the composite district infrastructure index, belonged to Manipur and these were namely, Tamenglong, Chandel and Churachandpur.
